Frequently Asked Questions

What is your furniture style?
I focus on modern clean lines, with a little twist — I always include an original feature or decoration that sets it apart from a store-bought piece.  I am most influenced by Mid-Century Modern, American Arts & Crafts, and traditional Japanese design.  I use clear satin finishes to highlight the natural beauty of the wood grain.  I prefer traditional joinery techniques.  When possible, I like to include custom-made leather or metal details or hardware.

What kind of woods and glues do you use?  I worry about keeping my home and family safe.
I primarily use hardwoods grown in the USA in sustainable forests that support the health of the planet.  If I use plywood (to prevent unwanted expansion/contraction with heat and moisture, or cut down on costs) I use formaldehyde-free high quality plywood such as Apple Ply.  I always use food-safe water-proof glue.

Where were you trained?
My grandmother would want me to tell you that I received my Bachelor’s degree from Stanford University.  While this is true, the honest truth is that I enjoyed my education more at Laney Community College, where I completed the “Wood Technology” certificate program.  I am currently an Adjunct Instructor for that same program.  I also have apprenticed under Scott Wynn, a licensed architect and outstanding woodworker.

What kind of timeline can I expect?
It depends on the scope of your project of course.  We will agree to a timeline once the design phase of the project is complete.  And I can also help propose alternate/simpler construction techniques if your budget and timeline are tight.

Can I really afford a custom-built piece of furniture?
I am biased of course, but I think it’s worth the investment!  Your custom furniture will be a piece that will make you smile and last for many years to come.  I charge reasonable fees for my work — That is one of the upsides of being newer to the game.  When you see the results, and know the hours upon hours of individualized attention and hard work, you will be impressed and feel good about your investment.  Most importantly, I stand behind my work.  If you are dissatisfied with the functionality or durability of your piece, I will repair, replace, or even refund you.

Do you do built-ins?
Yes.  I can design, construct, and install your built-in cabinet, bookcase, desk, fold-away table top or really anything.  This involves a more intensive design process as I will have to measure the space and work with existing surfaces (which are rarely flat or square).  However, for now, I am not doing kitchen cabinet refacing or custom-built kitchen cabinets.

Do you teach woodworking?
Yes.  Whenever it’s possible, I teach in the Wood Technology program at Laney College in Oakland, CA.  I most often teach WDTEC 20 and the WDTEC 200. If you are lucky enough to have your own wood shop, I can also arrange for private one-on-one or small group instruction.
